Tapping Solar Energy

Tapping Solar Energy

Alternative energy sources like the solar, wind, tidal and geothermal are widely accepted nowadays. The reason being they are renewable by nature and are also non-polluting. Thus the twin objectives of energy production as well as environmental preservation can be largely met.

Bio-energy is also a form of energy that includes organic matter such as plants, vegetables and converts it into other form of energy. Biogas is a clean, unpolluted and cheap source of energy in rural areas. It is basically produced from cattle dung in a biogas plant. It provides fuel to rural people. It also produces enriched manure to supplement the use of chemical fertilizers, to bring improvement in the life of poor farmers in the villages and also helps in improving the sanitation and hygiene.

Biogas plants are not expensive to set up and are also easy to operate. But the only disadvantage is that if people cut down trees without replanting then this would soon turn into a non-renewable source.

Solar energy is also a very good option as the energy from the sun is inexhaustible and plenty. Countries like India make the most use of the solar energy by using solar cookers, solar water heaters, solar lighting systems, and solar air heaters and also in some cases solar refrigeration.

Wind Turbine as an Alternative

Wind Turbine as an Alternative

Wind Turbine

Wind Turbine

Winds are caused due to the uneven heating of earth’s atmosphere by the sun, also due to irregularities on the surface of the earth. The kinetic energy present in wind can be converted to other forms such as mechanical or electrical energy.

To harness the kinetic energy of wind, we make use of a wind turbine. A wind turbine consists of a set of rotor blades (usually three in number), coupled to a generator. The rotors are connected to the generator through a shaft.

The wind turns the blades, which spin the shaft and thus enabling the generator to produce electricity. Further sensors present on the turbine detect wind speed and direction and the turbine can be lined up in the direction of the wind. Another alternative is to make use of the mechanical energy to perform activities such as grinding and pumping water.

Wind energy can also be utilized in air ventilators which use natural wind to provide cooling.

Hot Water From the Sun

If your electric, gas or oil hot water heater is shot and needs to be replaced, replace it with a solar hot water system. Solar panels installed on the roof of your home will make hot water from the sun, which will be stored in a storage tank inside your house. Other than the cost of purchasing and installing the panels, the cost of making hot water will be free.

A solar hot water system is good for the environment and reduces our reliance on oil. All you need is a roof that is unobstructed by trees and is facing south or south west.

To lower your costs, the federal government is providing a tax credit equal to 30% of the purchase and installation cost. In addition to the federal tax credit, some states are providing state and property tax credits and some utilities are providing rebates.

A Solar Cooker

A Solar Cooker

Solar cookers and solar water heaters are increasingly becoming household items. A lot of families are resorting to usage of solar appliances for their domestic needs whether fully or partially. These appliances not only help in conservation of energy and save money on electricity bill but also help in reducing domestic carbon footprints.

However, these are not the only solar appliances that can help you create a greener tomorrow. Some of the less popular solar appliances include solar cells and solar panels.

Solar cells are devices that convert solar energy into electrical energy that can be used for running lights and fans.

Solar panels are a set of solar cells that can be used for running larger equipments.

The most basic solar device is the solar torch or solar lamp that can be recharged by exposing it to the sun and can be used for several hours after sunset. The best things about making use of solar energy for household purposes is that unlike wind and water energy solar energy is available everywhere. It is not only cheaper and easier to trap but also requires the bare minimum equipments for operation. Though the process of cooking or heating water takes a little longer than the conventional means, the overall effect on the environment by using solar devices is well worth the delay.

Solar energy is a versatile source of energy that sustains life on planet earth. However, the role of solar energy is not limited to manufacturing of food by the plants, it is also the best source of alternative energy and has become quite popular in the wake of fast dwindling conventional resources of energy such as coal and oil.

The most important appliances that can make use of solar energy are solar cookers, solar water heaters and solar panels.

The solar heaters are simple devices made of a rectangular box with a special glass lid. The lid allows solar energy to get in and cook the food while sun is in the sky.

Similarly water heaters consists of pipes that are exposed to sun, so that they can absorb solar energy and heat the water.

Solar panels are more complicated solar devices that are used for conversion of solar energy into electrical energy for running household appliances such as fans and light bulbs.

Solar energy

As we all know two thirds of the earth is covered with water and it could be the best alternative source of Energy. Best example, which can describe this resource, is the invention of steam engine. If we were able to move a train with the help of water we can definitely move a road transport vehicle with the help of water.

My idea is that if we can make water run fast enough to work a turbine which will be embedded in automobile electricity will be produced which then will be able to move a vehicle.

Alternatively, if we boil water to 100 degrees centigrade steam generated can be used to move a vehicle.

Another great resource is solar Energy. We can make any thing out of solar energy such as glowing an incandescent bulb, continuous supply of hot water, move a vehicle etc… The sun is an infinite source of Energy. The best thing about solar energy is that you can store the energy and use it whenever it is needed. We can make solar machines at a low cost. Pollution can be enormously reduced so we can make the environment cleaner. Solar energy will be the next generation energy resource. People should elucidate about uses of solar energy.

Weight Loss from a Fighter

Weight Loss from a Fighter

by Andrew
(Huntington, WV, USA)

I’ve struggled with my weight my whole life; everyone in my family is ‘bigger’ & I’m not the exception. The real problem with this is my hobbies. I wrestled, boxed, & did Brazilian ju Jitsu all through high school and got into MMA fighting when I started attending college. I did it as a hobby & for fun, but I was actually pretty good & ended up headlining cards & making quite a bit of money doing it. However, fighting is governed by weight classes & I’m not strong or tall enough to compete at heavy weight so I have to diet down to 205 to be competitive.

Things I’ve found over the years that were the most important variables to my weight loss were:

1) Water / Hydration — No matter how much I worked out (which was more than you can probably imagine) I’d keep my weight constant but I’d have trouble losing any unless I drank massive amounts of water. I used to drink 2-3 gallons a day. Now this is extreme, but I also probably sweated out 1-1.5 gallons a day. The average person should drink at least a half to a whole gallon of water a day. CRYSTAL LIGHT! Don’t forget that. It adds good flavors to the water with very, very minuscule amounts of anything bad (sodium). Don’t do Gatorade or diet sodas it just isn’t the same.

2) The other main component was running. I could lift, swim, box, spar, wrestle, and roll(ju jitsu) all in the same day but I would not lose weight unless I actually put road work in. It sucks. Running is the most boring, tedious, annoying activity I can do, but If I want to lose weight I absolutely have to run.

3) Daily weigh-ins are helpful. I used to take a poster board & mark it off like a graph into 2×2 inch squares. I would weigh myself & put it in the first square, then I’d set a goal, say..45 days away. I’d count out 45 squares & put my target weight. Then I’d average out how much weight I would have to lose each day to reach that goal & write in a countdown in the squares.

Say I wanted to go from 230 to 200 in 30 days. First square would be 230..229..228..227… until you get to the last square. Then I’d write my actual weight down each day below it to see where I was on my goal. At first I’d be way under maybe 223 when my ‘schedule; said 229, but you start losing weight slower & it evened out.

These are just a few tips from a half-way decent professional fighter to you! Good Luck
